Make your project standout – give it an edge

Daffodils dancing, cherry trees blossoming and bumblebees buzzing – yes, Spring has arrived. And while gardeners fertilise flowerbeds and prune roses, landscape architects are itching to get on with exciting designs they’ve been planning over the winter months.

To bring those schemes alive, thoughts turn inevitably to edging, the essential component for seamlessly linking different zones of a garden landscape and elevating a project to a higher level of creativity.

Edging’s flexibility makes it every landscaper’s favourite go-to component. Multiple styles of gracefully curved shapes and radii are possible with edging: whether you’re designing a lawn, path or bed, it’s perfect for eye-catching layouts. And of course, if you want sharp, clean, and neat straight lines, edging provides those too.

There are just so many ways edging can separate different areas. Gravel on one side and planter beds on the other, river stones set against decking, or raised flower beds held back by stone walls - variations exist to suit every setting.

To put design ideas into practice, Kinley’s extensive range of steel and aluminium edging will help crystallise landscapers’ thinking. And to assist the creative process, we’ve a really informative 33-page edging booklet, which comprehensively details every part of the package we can offer landscape architects.

Project-standout-4

As well as detailing our edging range – and you may be surprised by just how far the range extends - we’ve included a series of case studies showing how some of the country’s leading landscapers have used our edging to great effect in prominent projects across the UK.

At Canary Wharf’s new Crossrail station, for example, Foster + Partners worked with landscapers Gillespies to create a rooftop garden with winding paths bordered by exotic plants. The edging had to be heard-wearing enough to cope with heavy pedestrian traffic but flexible enough to create the curves. They selected Kinley’s AluExcel, a strong lightweight aluminium edging, rather than waste valuable space by bedding in concrete pin kerbs. Speed of installation was another advantage – a team of two can fit 40m of AluExcel in an hour.

At a new £2billion community development called Chapelton of Elsick, near Aberdeen, Kinley was selected to help the architects achieve footpaths that fitted in with the organic shapes of the grass verges. AluExcel edging was manipulated on site to produce a range of diverse geometries that concrete could never match.

Although aluminium has become established as the first choice in landscape edging – because of its strength, flexibility, durability and lightness which make for easy installation and minimal maintenance – it’s steel edging that’s often preferred for the biggest projects with the heaviest traffic. Here, Kinley’s ExcelEdge steel edgings with their wide range of grades, formats and finishes have proved themselves time and time again.

At Handyside Gardens, at the heart of the new King’s Cross development, Kinley’s HighGrade Bespoke planters, made from CorTen steel, were used to create an attractive range of raised beds. For safety reasons, the top edge of the planters needed to be 50mm thick. Because of the various sizes and shapes of the planters, to achieve this, the top capping had to be welded into the planters on site. It took more time than usual installations but the end result delighted the developers.

Many projects these days have selected powder-coated edging, which maintains its strength and its appearance for years. The electrosticallly-applied powder is available in any RAL colour and adds an aesthetically pleasing touch. Unfinished edging’s appearance, on the other hand, will continue to evolve over time, which can be every bit as pleasing. Whatever your project, we’ve a Kinley finish to suit – from powdercoated, galvanised, untreated or our famous CorTen, you decide.
