London Wall Place is a 500,000 sq ft development next to the City of London with two commercial properties and an acre of magnificent public realm space. The new outdoor landscape is set to be a destination space that incorporates gardens and historic landmarks. Completed in January 2018, the property has a construction value of £219.2 million.
Incorporating the Roman City Wall and St Alphage Church Tower ruins, the two acre site comprises two buildings and public space with gardens and pathways that maintain heritage features while drawing comparisons with the contemporary.
Architect: Make Architect | Landscape Architect: Spacehub Design |
Main Contractor: Multiplex | Product Installer: Frosts Landscapes |
Completion Date: 2017 | Construction Period: 12+ weeks |
Products installed: Planterline bespoke edging in CorTen Steel
Application: Retaining edges to the planting areas and ramp access.
This prestigious site required a bespoke 4mm Planterline system to border the planting areas which extends down to the sunken garden via the ramp access. Specified in CorTen steel, the design contrasts the paving while reflecting the CorTen steel bridge and landscape’s existing heritage. In the garden, mood lighting is seamlessly incorporated into the steel retaining wall which not only lights up the pathway, but creates a tranquil ambience. ANS Global's Living Wall system was chosen for the scheme as a modular pre-grown system that uses natural soil.
The specifiers and landscape contractors wanted to find a product that was easy to install. The Planterline system is increasingly popular due to the simple installation method which makes it quick to construct, thus saving time on site. Our project managers provided on-site training and installation guidance throughout the implementation to ensure that the system was installed to the expected high standard.
Maximising the planting areas – The design called for as much green space to be available as possible. The slim steel profile of the edging ensured little space was taken up with a clunky retaining wall. The folded top edge adds a touch of strength and bold elegance.
The end result is a high-quality public space that reflects the intended modern design, while retaining tradition. The variable height planters beautifully line the ramp and step access to the gardens and provide a clearly defined edge and planting zone that is in character with the historic heritage of the scheme. The overall installation is an outstanding delivery of high quality products that provide a practical and peaceful space.
Kinley’s Planterline edging matched the style the design required. With its high-quality finish and bespoke options, it flawlessly fitted into the landscape. Although there were budget constraints, the Kinley team worked with the contractors to make careful changes to the original design of the edging to ensure that the architect’s vision was retained whilst reducing overall costs on the project.
At Kinley we work with clients to make their ideas reality. From small to large projects, we help create inspiring and unique outside spaces and urban environments through pioneering design and quality landscape products.
