Innovative, contemporary use of outside space for a London-based creative studio.
They wanted a landscape design that fitted in with their creative media image. The project comprised a mixture of green and functional space. It was complete in July 2018.
The project detail
Overlooking London’s skyline, Framestore’s balcony terraces are a touch of modern architecture among the traditional buildings of Chancery Lane. Kinley supplied a variety of the components that created a slick, free-flowing space, while also allowing practical breakout areas. The balcony located next to the staff restaurant extends the recreational space both visually and practically, creating a popular lunchtime relaxation area.

Choosing the product
The large terrace spaces required non-slip, low maintenance decking boards, as well as 6mm thick planters and plants suitable for a high rise area. The design also called for interesting ways to maximise seating space for staff, which resulted in cantilever benches fixed to planter walls in stylish, hardwearing iroko timber.
Managing the installation
With so many elements to install, the installation team needed a system that worked together. The bespoke planters and cantilever benches fit together seamlessly, and Kinley’s Terrafina decking system is easily installed using the pedestals and rails. The client’s staff were working in the office space throughout the renovation which meant that access to the terraces was limited and simple and easy delivery was needed to avoid impacting their working day.
Overcoming the challenges
Access to site – The project site was several floors up which made getting some of the larger products to the terrace difficult. Kinley’s planters come in modular panels, making transportation, delivery and installation on-site easy. With no crane or service lift to access the terraces, panels were individually wrapped and taken off the pallet into the standard lift. This meant each panel could fit in the lift and remained protected until ready to be installed.
Installation restrictions – The office space was in constant use by Framestore’s personnel throughout the installation which meant work had
to be carried out with minimal disruption.
The end result
Framestore now has a high quality, creative employee space that reflects the company’s image and incorporates functional work areas with recreational, tranquil places. The contemporary design was achieved with modern styling and materials. The whole space is low maintenance with Terrafina composite decking, high sided planters to delineate green planted areas with walkways, and cantilever benches which avoid rubbish traps.
The overall result is a delightful meeting, eating, relaxation, creative and entertaining breakout space in the heart of London.
