The iconic 1938 building constructed and designed by Charles Bristow on Putney Embankment has undergone an extension and members now have an expansive elevated exterior decking area to enjoy the view of the river with all of its rowing and boating activity.
The new deck area, constructed by 8Build Ltd, consists of a substantial steel frame with an elevated deck at first floor level. The steel support system still allows access to the boat storage facilities but has now created a balustraded deck area accessed from the Boat House at first floor level and via steps from street level. Like many institutions, the club has to look at all sources for funds and the Boathouse is available for functions with the new deck area adding a whole new dimension to its commercial attraction. With patio doors now opening on to the new deck, clients and members have uninterrupted views across the Thames. There can be few better places in London to enjoy a Pimms or G&T on a summer’s evening.

As with any commercial facility, low maintenance and aesthetics are very important. The Terrafina Excel Decking was specified as it is a PEFC certified wood-polymer composite providing a robust surface that doesn’t splinter. The lack of visible fixings and completely flat slip resistant surface, even when wet, were very important design factors when specifying composite decking knowing that many users may well have bare feet.
The deck sits on an elevated galvanised steel gantry and with the Terrafina unique fixing system only the first row of boards needs to be mechanically retained with the rest of the boards very simply clipped in. One of the many benefits of the Terrafina System is that it is very simple and quick to install and in this particular case the main contractors decided against specialist contractors and fitted it themselves.
The raised decking area is a great new facility for the boathouse and we are all looking forward to sitting out there this summer.
