Commercial and residential property developers and architects are realising the value of roof terraces in high-density urban areas. Flat roof spaces that would otherwise be unusable can be transformed into versatile outdoor environments with a wide range of uses including:
A roof garden or terrace will almost always increase the value of the property and make it more attractive to potential occupants. However, creating a garden several storeys above street level can bring challenges, and if you are thinking about incorporating a terrace into a refurbishment or new-build project it is important they are taken into consideration.
With our expertise in this field and our constantly evolving range of terrace systems, decking, tiles and planters, you can bring excitement to rooftop landscape design while using products designed and manufactured for quality, durability, and full compliance with safety regulations.
A good quality support structure is key to creating a sturdy, safe terraced area. As roofs are rarely flat or level, our Raaft system is the perfect solution. Manufactured from extruded aluminium, its joists are durable, weatherproof and maintenance-free. Height adjustable pedestals make easy work of raising the terrace above the roofline, stabilising the structure and getting the levels right.
Buildings standing 18 metres or higher require a Class A fire rated support structure such as Preventa. This uses Raaft extruded aluminium joists with galvanised steel height-adjustable pedestals to create a completely Class A fire rated terrace base.
Composite wood resin decking is a low-maintenance, rot-proof, Class B fire rated alternative to timber with the feel and look of natural wood. Our Terrafina Excel Board composite decking is a premium product without an equal on the market and is available in up to six authentic colours and two finishes – plain (non-grooved) and yacht deck (grooved).
For taller buildings, our porcelain decking or tiles combine a Class A fire rating with the elegance and durability of world-famous Italian and Spanish porcelain. Other benefits of porcelain are its high strength to weight ratio, anti-slip properties when wet and excellent resistance to scratches, stains, mould and frost, making it the ideal choice for high-traffic areas.
Farrino porcelain decking has the appearance of natural wood and its range of five colours has something to complement most contemporary and traditional settings. Its longboard format brings further authenticity to a wood-effect terrace.
Atria porcelain tiles are another way of creating naturalistic exterior flooring. With 44 patterns to choose from, they replicate the beauty of natural wood or stone while providing a more durable, practical and safer surface.
A terrace can easily be transformed into a garden with layers of interest and a feeling of permanence by adding planters. Ornamental grasses, flowers, shrubs and small trees all add structure and contrast, while screens create drama and integrated benches provide places to pause and absorb the surroundings.
Our commercial planters can be powder coated in any RAL colour or in Corten weathering steel that blends perfectly with the natural colours and textures of a garden.
Whether you are a customer, specifier or contractor, we are here to support you at every stage of the project from design to completion, helping you create exciting outdoor spaces with products that are attractive, practical, safe and durable.
If you are an architect, landscape designer or contractor we also offer a range of CPD (continual professional development) courses that will enrich your knowledge of terrace systems and associated building regulations.
