Metal Landscape Edging FAQs: The ultimate question and answer guide

July 2023

Many of our customers frequently ask the same questions about aluminium and steel landscape edging, so we have created this guide to answer them. Browse through the categories and questions, and if your question isn’t answered, contact us. We may also add your question to this guide.

Aluminium Edging FAQs

Why is AluExcel better than traditional concrete edging?

AluExcel offers a more durable and attractive alternative to concrete edging. Its untreated surface is highly weather-resistant, won’t crack in frost, and resists stains and discolouration. It can be easily cut and formed into flowing curves, making it versatile for landscaping. Concrete requires a cement sub-base and haunching, whereas AluExcel’s special spikes allow quick installation. Additionally, it avoids grass dieback caused by acids in concrete.

When is aluminium edging better than steel edging?

Aluminium is highly corrosion-resistant and maintains its appearance for many years. It’s better for coastal environments, lighter to carry, easier to cut and shape than steel, and won’t rust nearby surfaces.

Is aluminium maintenance-free?

Aluminium is low-maintenance. It may need occasional scrubbing with mild soap, rinsing, and drying. Oxidation can occur, forming a powdery white layer, which can be cleaned with a vinegar and water mix. Coated aluminium should be checked periodically for chips or cracks.

Is aluminium toxic?

Aluminium contains toxins, but these generally pose no danger. However, for growing edible plants, steel is safer as aluminium can leach into the soil.

Steel Edging FAQs

Why is Bison steel kerbing a cheaper alternative to concrete?

Although the cost per metre may be higher than concrete, other factors make Bison steel cheaper overall:

  1. Weight and thickness: Thinner and lighter than concrete, making storage and transport cheaper.
  2. Installation: Easier and faster to install by one person; often doesn’t need a concrete sub-base or haunching.
  3. Strength and durability: Resists cracking, can withstand knocks, and damaged sections are easily straightened or replaced.

When is steel edging better than aluminium edging?

Steel is stronger than aluminium, making it suitable for heavy machinery, vehicles, or structural retention. Steel also offers more colour options, including untreated, galvanised, Corten weathering steel, or powder-coated finishes.

What’s the difference between untreated steel and Corten steel?

Both develop an orange-brown patina, but Corten steel’s alloy accelerates this process. The patina provides aesthetic and practical benefits, working well in traditional and contemporary designs.

How do I prevent Corten steel from staining surrounding surfaces?

Pre-weathering the steel or creating a gravel border can prevent runoff from staining adjacent light-coloured or porous surfaces.

How much maintenance does steel edging need?

High-grade steel and Corten steel require little maintenance. Powder-coated steel is also highly corrosion-resistant; any damage to the coating should be repaired promptly.

Choosing Landscape Edging FAQs

Why is edging needed for hard and soft landscaping?

Edging protects surfaces, guides screeding for resin-bound or wet-pour areas, prevents paver movement, creates level changes, contains loose aggregates, and provides clear demarcation between different areas.

What is the best edging material for paving?

Paving requires a stable edge to prevent loosening and trip hazards. Aluminium or steel edging allows paving to be laid immediately and avoids issues like grass dieback caused by concrete. Recommended products include Borderline, AluExcel, Urban, Fort, and Bison depending on the project.

What is the best edging for resin-bound aggregates?

Resin-bound surfaces require level, stable edges. Aluminium is ideal due to its dimensional stability, strength, and narrow profile. Recommended product: ResinEdge.

What is the best edging for loose aggregates?

A strong, stable edge prevents shifting and spreading of gravel or other loose aggregates. Aluminium or steel edging is effective and can be elevated slightly to deter stray material. Options include Borderline, AluExcel, Urban, or Fort.

What is the best edging for lawns and borders?

Timber and plastic are short-term solutions. Aluminium and steel provide long-term durability and low maintenance. Recommended products: AllEdge (domestic), AluExcel, Urban (heavy-duty). Options come in various heights, finishes, and coatings.

What’s the best edging for green roofs and roof terraces?

RoofEdge is designed for these applications, maintaining neat edges while allowing drainage. Available in galvanised, Corten, or powder-coated finishes.

Can I use landscape edging to create a raised border?

Yes. Products like Apex aluminium planter edge (225mm high) allow raised borders with a striking visual effect.

Specifying & Ordering Landscape Edging FAQs

Which Kinley metal edging is aluminium and which is steel?

Steel products: Bison, Borderline, Fort, RoofEdge, Urban
Aluminium products: AllEdge, AluExcel, Apex, ResinEdge

How much does metal landscape edging cost compared with other types?

Metal edging is more expensive than timber or concrete, but offers long-term savings due to reduced replacement, maintenance, and installation costs.

What thickness is metal landscape edging?

  • AllEdge: 5mm
  • AluExcel: 0–8.5mm
  • Apex: 6mm (12mm top fold)
  • Bison: 7mm
  • Borderline: 2–5mm
  • Fort: 7mm
  • ResinEdge: 5mm
  • RoofEdge: 6mm
  • Urban: 3–6mm

How long are your lead times for delivery?

Standard products are usually 2–3 working days. Bison and Fort are 2–3 weeks. Corten steel delivery is 4–6 weeks. Contact us for bespoke products.

Metal Landscape Edging Installation FAQs

How fast is AluExcel installation compared with concrete?

AluExcel installs faster because it is lighter, easier to carry, doesn’t need a solid base or cement bed, and can be backfilled immediately.

What’s the tightest curve that metal edging can form?

  • AllEdge: 1m
  • AluExcel: 5m
  • Apex: cannot be curved; preformed 90° corners available
  • Bison: 2m
  • Borderline: 1–1.5m
  • Fort: 2–3m
  • ResinEdge: 1m
  • Urban 3mm: 3m
  • Urban 6mm: 5m

Can you form metal landscape edging into corners?

Yes. Edging can be scored and bent, or preformed 90° corners are available for Fort and AluExcel.

Can landscape edging be installed on a Type 3 sub-base?

No. Type 1 base is recommended.

Other Landscape Edging FAQs

How does using Bison kerbing reduce carbon compared with concrete?

  • Embodied carbon and transport: 34.3% lower
  • Distribution emissions: 970% lower
  • End-of-life recycling: 1050% lower
  • Overall cradle-to-grave emissions: 21% lower than concrete
