Many of our customers frequently ask the same questions about aluminium and steel landscape edging, so we have created this guide to answer them. Browse through the categories and questions, and if your question isn’t answered, contact us. We may also add your question to this guide.
AluExcel offers a more durable and attractive alternative to concrete edging. Its untreated surface is highly weather-resistant, won’t crack in frost, and resists stains and discolouration. It can be easily cut and formed into flowing curves, making it versatile for landscaping. Concrete requires a cement sub-base and haunching, whereas AluExcel’s special spikes allow quick installation. Additionally, it avoids grass dieback caused by acids in concrete.
Aluminium is highly corrosion-resistant and maintains its appearance for many years. It’s better for coastal environments, lighter to carry, easier to cut and shape than steel, and won’t rust nearby surfaces.
Aluminium is low-maintenance. It may need occasional scrubbing with mild soap, rinsing, and drying. Oxidation can occur, forming a powdery white layer, which can be cleaned with a vinegar and water mix. Coated aluminium should be checked periodically for chips or cracks.
Aluminium contains toxins, but these generally pose no danger. However, for growing edible plants, steel is safer as aluminium can leach into the soil.
Although the cost per metre may be higher than concrete, other factors make Bison steel cheaper overall:
Steel is stronger than aluminium, making it suitable for heavy machinery, vehicles, or structural retention. Steel also offers more colour options, including untreated, galvanised, Corten weathering steel, or powder-coated finishes.
Both develop an orange-brown patina, but Corten steel’s alloy accelerates this process. The patina provides aesthetic and practical benefits, working well in traditional and contemporary designs.
Pre-weathering the steel or creating a gravel border can prevent runoff from staining adjacent light-coloured or porous surfaces.
High-grade steel and Corten steel require little maintenance. Powder-coated steel is also highly corrosion-resistant; any damage to the coating should be repaired promptly.
Edging protects surfaces, guides screeding for resin-bound or wet-pour areas, prevents paver movement, creates level changes, contains loose aggregates, and provides clear demarcation between different areas.
Paving requires a stable edge to prevent loosening and trip hazards. Aluminium or steel edging allows paving to be laid immediately and avoids issues like grass dieback caused by concrete. Recommended products include Borderline, AluExcel, Urban, Fort, and Bison depending on the project.
Resin-bound surfaces require level, stable edges. Aluminium is ideal due to its dimensional stability, strength, and narrow profile. Recommended product: ResinEdge.
A strong, stable edge prevents shifting and spreading of gravel or other loose aggregates. Aluminium or steel edging is effective and can be elevated slightly to deter stray material. Options include Borderline, AluExcel, Urban, or Fort.
Timber and plastic are short-term solutions. Aluminium and steel provide long-term durability and low maintenance. Recommended products: AllEdge (domestic), AluExcel, Urban (heavy-duty). Options come in various heights, finishes, and coatings.
RoofEdge is designed for these applications, maintaining neat edges while allowing drainage. Available in galvanised, Corten, or powder-coated finishes.
Yes. Products like Apex aluminium planter edge (225mm high) allow raised borders with a striking visual effect.
Steel products: Bison, Borderline, Fort, RoofEdge, Urban
Aluminium products: AllEdge, AluExcel, Apex, ResinEdge
Metal edging is more expensive than timber or concrete, but offers long-term savings due to reduced replacement, maintenance, and installation costs.
Standard products are usually 2–3 working days. Bison and Fort are 2–3 weeks. Corten steel delivery is 4–6 weeks. Contact us for bespoke products.
AluExcel installs faster because it is lighter, easier to carry, doesn’t need a solid base or cement bed, and can be backfilled immediately.
Yes. Edging can be scored and bent, or preformed 90° corners are available for Fort and AluExcel.
No. Type 1 base is recommended.
